Hot and humid West Virginian summer days are here and this has meant that I crave cooler foods. This is where nana ice cream becomes my food savior.
What is nana ice cream?
For those of you who are vegan newbies, nana ice cream is blended frozen bananas. I think nana ice cream was the reason I wanted a high powered blender from the start as making this in a normal blender can result in less desirable results.
On the plus side, if you don’t have a high powered blender but have a food processor, you can make this recipe in that too. Just blend for longer until the banana is fully blended.
Can I use non frozen bananas?
Unfortunately not. In order to make nana ice cream you need frozen bananas.
Freezing bananas makes them incredibly creamy. I never put a fresh banana into smoothies, once you try a frozen banana in your drinks you will never turn back.
Ice cream replacement
Nana ice cream is often seen as an ice-cream replacement. To me ice cream is a treat and should be creamy and sweet and just that, a treat.
Nana ice cream on the other hand is a staple and if it’s an ice cream replacer then I can happily say I eat ice cream 5 times a week. I feel no guilt eating this ‘ice cream’.
I love making different combinations of nana ice cream and adding fun toppings. It’s the best 5 minute meal and great for lunches or after dinner when I’m craving unhealthy ice cream.
Ripe bananas are the best. Ripe means sweeter which is what we want. I wait for all my bananas to get brown speckles and then peel and cut them up. I freeze them in reusable silicon zipper bags so I always have them on hand.
Do you taste the banana?
As a kid I hated bananas and the flavour of banana. Now I love it. But in case you are wodering you do taste the banana.
If you want to be naughty then you could add some bourbon or Frangelico to this to take away the banana flavor but lets not get addicted to how good this would taste okay 😉 And maybe give this a skip for breakfast! Haha! Adding cacao powder is another way to help mask the banana flavor and makes a delicious chocolate bowl.
Flavour combinations to try out:
Strawberry banana (frozen banana and frozen strawberries)
Blueberry banana (frozen banana and frozen blueberries)
Chocolate banana (frozen banana and cacao powder)
Peanut butter (frozen banana and a teaspoon or two of peanut butter)
Almond Butter (frozen banana and almond butter)
Maca (recipe below)
Coconut banana (frozen banana and replace almond milk with coconut milk)
Can I make it creamier?
I love nana ice cream for its simplicity. If you are however wanting to make a fancier ice cream I suggest the following.
Adding fats to banana ice cream makes it even more dairy ice cream like. Coconut cream and nut butters add a richness for a more decadent nana ice cream.
What is Maca?
Maca is a root from South America and known as a superfood. While I believe all nature provided plant foods are super foods I love using maca for it’s flavor and I do believe it has hormonal balancing properties. I think every female should include some maca especially around PMS times. Give it a try and see if you notice any differences. It’s also said to boost fertility so if you are trying to have a baby, I recommend giving this a try.
This maca nana ice cream is:
- High in vitamin C, B6 and Folate
- High Manganese, potassium and magnesium
- Low calorie
I urge you to give this a try. You might juts love it as much as I do. Try it with this raspberry granola.
Maca nana ice cream
My favourite 5 minute weekday breakfast (and admittingly lunch too) is this delicious bowl of nana ice cream topped with my favourite things.
- 4 ripe frozen bananas
- 1/4 cup almond milk (or plant milk of choice)
- 1 tsp maca powder
Add the all the ingredients to the blender and blend for a minute until smooth.
You can add a dash more milk if you need to get things moving.
I use the tamper (blender stick) to help keep the mixture moving.
Recipe calories inclue 20g granola
Until next time, happy cooking.
